‘Holey Mountain, make me home’ marks Harry

Bayston’s first solo exhibition post cancer and a

return to Sydney after five years of exhibitions and

art prizes in Melbourne.

The exhibition explores these journeys, both medical

and physical, through the use horses as stand-ins for

self-portraiture.

These horses appear and disappear through refined

gestures of lyrical, Impression-esq marks; running

between wooden frames and painted borders.

Holey Mountain is both place and person, with

painting becoming a tool to finding ones self after

being broken down and built up like the horses that

cross the canvas. Bayston stands there amongst the

paint, asking to be made whole, to make home.
