Monique Lovering
Monique Lovering is a contemporary artist whose practice is informed by her experiences living and working across New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Raised in Rotorua, New Zealand, Lovering graduated from the Queensland College of Art in Brisbane before establishing a 25-year career in graphic design and publishing, working across London, Auckland, Milan and Sydney.
During her time in London, Lovering's focus shifted towards painting, eventually becoming the centre of her creative practice. Her extensive travels through Italy, including a period living in Palermo, Sicily, further shaped her artistic language, bringing together a heightened sensory awareness with the earthy sensibilities of her New Zealand upbringing.
Monique Lovering's practice explores the shifting nature of memory and the emotional traces left by lived experience. Through a process of layering, erasure and concealment, her paintings become an act of emotional release, reflecting the ways in which memories are revisited, reinterpreted and transformed over time.
Lovering approaches memories as documents of the past, never fixed but continually reshaped by perspective and time. These abstracted fragments converge to form a broader visual language, where personal experiences are both revealed and obscured.
Touch, gesture and tension are central to her practice. The physical engagement of the body with the surface informs each mark, creating an interplay between control and spontaneity. Her work considers the complexities of human experience, exploring the enduring relationship between memory, emotion and the instinct to create beauty.
